18-08-2010 - Worlds 2010 Chiba 9/12 Dicembre 2010 - Application
Ll Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
It’s my pleasure to announce the opening of sponsorship applications for Worlds 2010, which will take place in Chiba (Japan), from the 9th to the 12th of December.
Sponsorships requests need to be entered in DCIfamily, sponsorship results will be announced on Wizards.Community; if you haven’t registered yet, you may do it now: http://community.wizards.com/.

Sponsorships
The sponsorship window opens today and will close on August the 25th; applications for full/travel/room sponsorship must be entered in our DCIfamily sponsorship tool: http://dcifamily.org/events/132
In addition to the sponsorship type you are requesting, you need to write a cover letter and it’s mandatory to reply to the following question:
In the last twelve months, in addition to working to develop your local area, have you done anything outside your local area or to strengthen the connection between your local area and the rest of the Magic judge community? (National or even outside your country)”.

Sponsorships are one of the most important recognition in our judge program and they are based on merit; the World Championship is the event that gathers players and judges from most of our countries and I believe that making efforts to help the other judges softening the barriers between countries is in the best spirit of this event.

Sponsorships are expected to be announced on September the 5th (the last day of PT Amsterdam).

Volunteers
If you want to apply as a volunteer, we expect the window for volunteer applications to be from the 5th to the 15th of September (announcements on the 17th).
Remember that, in case of very high number of applications, we can’t guarantee that all volunteers will be accepted and added to the official judge staff; we hope that announcing all volunteers three months before the event will allow everybody interested to find good flight tickets.

Hard work, even before and after the event
Although one of our most important goals is that we must enjoy the events and have fun, it’s also very important that all of us are aware that there will be hard work to do, and it’s not going to be only during the event!
If you want to apply for sponsorship (and, in case you are coming as volunteer, if you want to increase the possibility to be considered for future sponsorships), I need you to be aware that you will be required to reply to mails before the event, write reviews after the event, write a mini-report about your weekend (don’t worry, it’s not scary, it will just be a small, guided report); by applying for sponsorship or as volunteer in DCIfamily, you will be confirming that you are well aware that judging is not only knowing rules and policies and giving ruling to players but it’s also being part of a group, sharing knowledge and experience, building relationships, working together on projects and much more.

Message boards
All communication among judges will happen on the Wizards.Community message boards; if you haven’t registered yet, you may do it now: http://community.wizards.com/.

Good luck to all applicants and happy summer holidays to everybody ^__^

27-07-2010 - PT Amsterdam - Risultati sponsorship
The dedication of judges to the program sometimes astounds me. We had an incredible number of volunteer applications for PT Amsterdam, almost twice as many as we could use. Thanks to everyone who applied.

Ultimately, though, we couldn't accept everyone - there just isn't enough to do! - and figuring out who to accept may be the hardest thing I have ever had to do as a judge. I'm not joking when I say that it would have been easy to staff a Pro Tour just from the volunteers, and every person I had to turn down represented someone I wouldn't get a chance to meet in Amsterdam. I specifically requested this Pro Tour so that I'd have the opportunity to work with all the European judges I'd heard such good things about, and if the rest of the event reflects this level of enthusiasm, everything I've heard is true.

Some of you who were hoping to come but have not been selected may want to come anyway. You'll be more than welcome; while you won't be able to judge, there'll be plenty of social activities to participate in, including the traditional Thursday evening 2HG draft, and lots of EDH. There will be a seminar program that you're all welcome to participate in. And, I've been told there might be a few Magic tournaments going on. I hear those are fun. If you do want to join in, let me know offlist, and I'll make sure to keep you up to date on any planned extracurricular activities.

2 Judges will receive full sponsorship, so email me if you would like to be considered. The amount of judges for this event is limited.

- You have until the 26th of July to apply for this offer.
- Invitations will be confirmed close to that day, reception notices will be send out on the 27th at the latest.
- We get a lot of applications for sponsorships. It is quite likely that you will not be successful in your request, but keep trying for each event that you wish to attend.

What is the purpose of this sponsorship offer?
- The purpose of this offer is to help judges increase their level of knowledge and experience.
Many judges do not have access to this type of hands-on training, so this offer will help to provide it.

What types of candidates are most likely to be chosen?
- Level 2 judges who are working towards level 3, especially in areas where there are no level 3 judges available.
- Judges who speak the language of the country where the Grand Prix is held, hold an advantage off course, as do people who have shown commitment by paying for their own travel to events in the past.
- If you're not living in Europe, your chances will be smaller, but the invitation is open to all.

What is expected?
- You will bring two days worth of judging attire, including a DCI judge shirt and black pants.
(if you don't have judge shirt, we will provide one for you)
- You will judge the main event and/or side events (depending on staffing requirements) both Saturday and Sunday. This will require very long days with little breaks.
- In the case side events or main event is finished sooner than the other it is expected that you help with the build-down until the other is finished. This is the time that the GP has ended. Not before.
- We appreciate your presence for the registration that is held on Friday from 17:30 till 20:00.
- Assistance with the build-up on Friday is appreciated.
- A minimum of assistance with the build-down on Sunday after the event is expected. ½ Display will be rewarded to everyone assisting at least 2 hours. Expect tough physical work.
- You will prepare for the event thoroughly by reviewing all available rules, procedures and policies.

What is paid for?
- Airline ticket, economy class
- Hotel room base cost

What is NOT paid for?
- Food (except for the food & drink tickets you get each day)
- Taxi fares, bus fares, etc.
- Additional room costs (room service, movies, laundry, etc).
- Ticket change fees (if you change your ticket, you pay all related fees).

Hotel Info:
- You will be sharing a hotel room with another judge.
- Spouses, friends, significant others are not permitted
- Your hotel will be paid for starting the day before the event and last until the day after the event.
If you wish to stay longer or arrive earlier, you must arrange for this yourself.

Judge Testing:
- There will be the possibility to test on Sunday when less staff is needed. Judges willing to advance to lvl 2, need to notify me in advance.
If you are interested in advancing towards lvl 3, contact me and we'll go over the possibilities.

Compensation:
Displays
FJ Level 1 2
FJ Level 2 3
FJ Level 3 4
FJ Level 4 5
Each Judge will receive a package containing at least 10 Judge Foils
All compensation will be settled when the GP is considered finished. This is when Side events and main event have come to an end.
Compensation is given in English product of the current set.

Important Notes:
- While there are only 2 spots for a full sponsorship, we normally have a few spots with just hotel sponsorship as well, and we accept also judges who have their own lodging arranged. Please let us know if you would be interested in that offer as well.

You can apply for: (you can apply for multiple types)
Full sponsorship (when selected)
Partial sponsorship (when selected)
No sponsorship (when selected) (meaning we won't need to pay for travel or room, but you'll receive your normal compensation when accepted)
Volunteer (you can come freely, but compensation will be based on needs) *

<* Volunteers:>
The crew quantity which we select ourselves was calculated in relation to the expected amount of players.
Volunteers will receive 1 display of compensation except if the player attendance is higher than the expected number. For this event we expect 801 players. No changes to this compensation rule will be possible.
- This is not like a vacation, this is like work. It can be very rewarding and valuable, but it is hard work.
- If you are not chosen, don't take it personally. Only a limited number of judges are required for each event, but your chance will come soon.

Don't reply to any other email address... Only to me

24-02-2010 - PT San Juan 28/30 Maggio 2010 - Application
On behalf of the DCI Leadership, I'm pleased to announce that we're now accepting sponsorship applications for Pro Tour San Juan, 28-30 May, 2010.

The sponsorship process will work a bit differently than it has before.
The Sponsorship window is open from now through 7 March; only sponsorship (and not volunteer) applications will be acceptaed at this time.

Sponsorship decisions will be announced 15 March, at which time the
Volunteer application window will open, and a specific number of Volunteer slots will be offered.  The Volunteer window will close 29 March, and no further applications will be accepted.  The Volunteer list will be announced shortly thereafter.

For the first time, we're using the DCI Family website to manage our the sponsorships.  If you haven't already registered for DCIF, you will be required to do so before applying for the Pro Tour.  The good news is that you don't have to type in all your information--DCIF will do it for you.
Just go to
http://dcifamily.org/events/53/staff/apply.  We'll then manage all communication for the event from DCIF.

The form requires a cover letter and will ask you a few questions.  Please answer the questions and note any additional requests or requirements you might have or anything else you might want us to know on the cover letter (or use the cover letter if you need more space answering the questions).
If you have problems with the form or DCIF in general, let me know directly.

We're accepting Sponsorship applications from judges Level 2 and higher.
Level 1 Judges will be able to apply during the Volunteer period.

Best regards,
Sheldon

20-01-2010 - Il Judge Program nel 2010
Andy Heckt è stato appena confermato Judge Manager mondiale.
Questa è la sua mail di ringraziamento/presentazione del Judge Program a livello mondiale:

Hi everyone !
Firstly thank you for the welcomes (backs).

The Judge Program's success is due to your many efforts; you explain
rules, make difficult decisions, teach the game, organize tournaments,
and engage the player community surrounding each of you. Many of you give effort to the Program by writing articles, supporting Magic
websites, editing exam questions, translating messages, making videos, and even making Wiki like this one that details with more clarity who is involved to build this program
(
http://magic.wiki.xs4all.nl/index.php?title=The_things_we_do).

Many of you know that I'm not certified. I never have been able to
manage this Program without the council and advice of so many of you and especially the senior judges who truly lead it.

Level 5s advise and direct strategy of the program in various pillars
that uphold the Program.
Community - Riccardo, Outreach - Sheldon, Policy - Toby

Each Level 4 has projects they are overseeing. From Ingrid on Video and Pyramid, Jason on L3 testing, Adam with the Judge! Newsletter, Mark on Judge Center (with Brian and Steven's dedication), David for
Investigations, etc...

Many regional/language leaders exist of all levels, especially outside
North America; The Spanish Inquisition, Cristina (IT), Nick (UK),
Michael, Damian, James, Wearn, Yonemura-san, etc...

Further so many of you are involved in your own areas that are too
numerous to detail here (but can be here:
http://magic.wiki.xs4all.nl/index.php?title=The_things_we_do).

Wizards of the Coast values you, the judges, for your care and ownership of tournaments and service to the player communities you do for enjoyment. The value of judges has gained recognition to the top Executive level with President Greg Leeds and Vice-President Casey Reeter talking with many judges at Worlds Memphis. The Judge Program will not be managed by myself alone, but a large team you will come to know better:

Reid Schmadeka, WPN Program Manager - Reid is responsible for WPN
programs that are not specific to Magic or D&D: Reward programs, WPN materials and kits, and scheduling. Some of you know Reid from his time as Latin American Territory Manager and the JSS and other programs he has guided throughout his several years with Wizards of the Coast.

Scott Larabee, Magic Program Designer - Many of you know Scott as he manages the Pro Tour main events, but he is also who is responsible for DCI Policy, Premiere event programming, and WPN Magic content; Prereleases, FNM, etc...

Laura Kilgore, Professional Tournament Organizer Manager - The
importance of organizers to growing judges is significant and Laura
manages many of the best in both North and Latin America including
operations at Grand Prix.

Witney Williams, Pro Tour Event Manager - Witney continues to support the Judge Program within the Pro Tour wherein for years she has partnered to create an environment that recognizes and fosters the judge community and mentorship.

Helene Bergeot, Senior Manager of OP Programs - Helene has been involved in marketing Magic in Europe for years before she came to the US office on Magic Brand. Helene took leadership of the WPN in July and she is a solid friend of this Program.

This program is one of the most successful world-wide programs Wizards of the Coast operates and it is supported by a global team.
Dale Aitken, Robert Teirney, Sinclair Yuen, David Ong, Michael Lixue,
Ron Foster, RE Dalrymple, Kiyomi Shimazaki, and Takeshi Miyaska  for
Asia Pacific and Japan.

Felix Huybrechts, Gijsbert Hoogendijk, Joery Van Nevel, Patrick Scheire, Dieter Schooters, Damien Fuillemard, Jerome Mioso, Ingo Muhs, Mathias Kubiak, Enrico Boccabianco, Davide Bonati, Colin Smith, Tom Russell, Raymond Fong for Europe

...and likely more people I missed.

And more folks than that:
Arron Goolsbey as Senior Director of Organized Play Elaine Chase (one-time certified judge) and her Magic Brand Team Michael Dunlap for the WPN premiere team who assists organizers (which many of you also perform the functions of) John Grant as part of our Customer Service Group Linda Roberts the ever-present data analyst Joe Yochum who keeps us sane and operational
...and many others

I want to emphasize that this program is more than just mine to manage, but is operated by a mixture of 40+ WotC staff with twenty senior judges, nearly a hundred very active judges, and nearly two-thousand judges worldwide, in eight official languages.

We manage this program to help you at what you enjoy and do so well -
all of you.

Hi folks,
This is the announcement for the judge sponsorship offer for Grand Prix Brussels which will be held on 27-28 March. The format for the GP is Standard.
Please put the type of sponsorship you want (full/partial/none/volunteer*, applying for multiple is possible and does not result in changing your odds) in the subject line.
Based on needs, FULL and PARTIAL sponsorship judges are expected to help out during registration and during the later shifts on Sunday.
2 Judges will receive full sponsorship, so email me if you would like to be considered. If you are a high-quality level 2 judge in an area that requires a level 3 judge for QTs, you have the best chance of coming. We also offer a limited amount of partial sponsorships. Please put the type of sponsorship you want (full/partial/none/volunteer*) in the subject line.
The amount of judges for this event is limited.
Please reply to dcieurope@hasbro.be

DCI Judge Sponsorship Program

The DCI will pay for the travel and accommodations for 2 judges to gain experience judging a high level event.

How to apply for this offer:
- Email dcieurope@hasbro.be with the following information:
Dci Number, full name, email address, phone number, judge level, judging experience, names of main judges/TOs that you work with, and the country you live in (for insurance reasons)
- Please indicate if you want full, partial or no sponsorship (if nothing is indicated we assume you
want full sponsorship).
- You have until the 1st of February to apply for this offer.
- Invitations will be confirmed close to that day.

(if you don’t have judge shirt, we will provide one for you)
- You will judge the main event and/or side events (depending on staffing requirements) both Saturday and Sunday. This will require very long days with little breaks.
- In the case side events or main event is finished sooner than the other it is expected that you help with the build-down until the other is finished. This is the time that the GP has ended. Not
before.
- We appreciate your presence for the registration that is held on Friday from 17:30 till 20:00.
- Assistance with the build-up on Friday is appreciated.
- Assistance with the build-down on Sunday after the event is expected. ½ Display will be
rewarded to everyone assisting at least 2 hours. Expect tough physical work.
- You will prepare for the event thoroughly by reviewing all available rules, procedures and
policies.

Partial sponsorhip (when selected)
No sponsorship (when selected) (meaning we won't need to pay for travel or room, but you''ll receive your normal compensation when accepted)
Volunteer (you can come freely, but compensation will be based on needs) *

* Volunteers:
The crew quantity which we select ourselves was calculated in relation to the expected amount of players.
Volunteers will receive 1 display of compensation except if the player attendance is higher than the expected number. For this event we expect 1400 players.

Only to me

08-09-2009 - Ripartiamo alla grande!
Ciao,

Come?

- Revisione Vecchi Articoli: Salvatore La Terra

Hello Judges,

At this time, the DCI Judge Program would like to hear from judges interested in working at Worlds in Rome 2009 (including Public Events or as volunteers). We have a number of sponsorship opportunities for judges at Worlds held November 19 - 22.

We are looking for hardworking judges who would like an opportunity to gain experience working with some of the best players and judges in the world. Working at an event like this is also a great way to gain the experience needed to build skills and advance within the DCI Judge Program. It's also a chance to see other areas of the world and make friends who share your interests. The sponsorship application process is now open and will close Friday, September 11, for full, room, and travel sponsorships. We will continue to take volunteers after this date (though early volunteers are preferred).

If you wish to apply for sponsorship for this event, you must email the DCI Judge Program via John Carter at John.Carter@wizards.com. Please use "Worlds 2009 Judge Application" in the subject line.

Sponsorship Requirements:
* Able to work 7:45AM Thursday until Sunday 10PM.
* Have up-to-date contact information with the DCI.
* Must be 18 years of age or older for sponsorship. Under 18 may volunteer.
* Able to judge long hours with little sleep and few breaks. Days usually include 10 to 12 hours of work.
* Able to perform physically demanding jobs relating to tournament setup.
* Fluent enough in English to operate at a Magic tournament.
* Highly proficient with current Magic rules and current with DCI policies.
* Willing and able to assist the event staff as required with additional duties which may include registration, folding table cloths, floor maintenance, radio check-in/out, etc.
* Must be able to respond to emails within 72 hours with regards to travel arrangements and scheduling.
* Will be required to submit reviews on fellow judges after the event.

What is Expected?
* You will bring four days of judging attire, including a DCI Judge Polo, black pants, and black shoes. Judge shirts will be available onsite while supplies last.
* You will judge the main event and / or public events Thursday morning through Sunday evening. This will require very long days with minimal breaks. Some schedules may include working public events past midnight.
* You will prepare for the event thoroughly by reviewing all available rules, policies, and procedures and by responding to the organizers as required within 72 hours.

What is Not Paid For? (This is a partial list of common assumptions.)
* Meals (Each Judge will receive a small lunch per diem or some but not all food will be provided).
* Taxi, bus, or train fares, etc.
* Hotel room incidentals (room service, movies, laundry, etc).
* Ticket change fees (if you change your ticket, you pay all related fees).

Room Sponsorship Information:
* You will be sharing a hotel room with at least one other judge.
* Additional guests including other judges, spouses, friends, volunteers, players, and significant others are not permitted to stay with you.
* Your hotel will be paid for starting the day before the event until the event is completed. If you wish to stay longer or arrive earlier, you must make these arrangements for yourself.

Judge Testing:
* Judge testing for level 1 - 3 will be available. L3 testing requires additional paperwork. L1 and L2 test recommends advance notice to make optimal arrangements.
* Due to limited time and staff, candidates wishing to be tested may not always be tested.

Important Notes:
* This is not like a vacation, this is like work. It can be very rewarding and valuable, but it is hard work.
* If you are not chosen, don't take it personally. More judges apply for spaces than are available, and any given selection is based on event and program needs, not personal preferences.

Application Requirements:
* Your name
* Your DCI number
* Your Level
* Sponsorship desired-Full, Room, Travel, or Volunteer
* Languages you speak fluently or near fluently
* Any special requirements you have
* L2 applicants: How would to rate the usefulness of the judge pyramid?
* L3 applicants: How would to rate the usefulness of the judge pyramid?
* To apply for Level 3 testing (limited availability, incomplete L3 testing applications are rejected):
- Take a L3 Practice Test in the Judge Center and include your score in your application
- If your score was not passing, detail what you will do to improve it prior to the event
- Include the name and email of the Level 3+ judge who is your mentor
- Contact your mentor and ask them to submit a L3 evaluation review via the Judge Center
